When was the last time you lived in the moment? How long has it been since you were completely present with yourself? Life is busy, people are busy, our minds are busy and there does not seem to by any sign of things slowing down. I have found in my own life that my busyness does not always equate to success in life, in fact in usually leads to more frustration which in turn leads to more busyness. This post is the beginning of a series of posts to come.
I want to share some of the things that I have found to be helpful in living in the moment. The first thing is that living in the moment does not mean never planning or goal setting. I believe that without that living without a goal or a target is like getting in the car and driving for hours with no destination in mind. This way of living only burns lots of energy and very little living is actually enjoyed. So fhte following are some steps that I have taken in my own life:
- Be keenly aware that your life is busy and that something needs to change. Once you become of aware of this then and only then can you take steps to make some much needed changes. For many people though, it takes a hospitalization (which for me it did), or set back of some sort to grab their attention.
- Just being aware of the busyness is not quite enough to make the change. Making changes requires time, energy and effort on your part. Upon becoming aware make a list of all the things that you have going on in your life, be very specific. This may take more than a few minutes, so spend the time necessary. There is something very therapeutic about writing things out. Remember, this is all about taking your life back.
- Now that you have made your list, some obvious areas of neglect in your life may have jumped off the page. For instance, not enough or no time with family, no time for spending time with God or no time for fun in your life. We will spend more time in this area in the next post.
After completing those three steps it may be helpful to sit and think on what you wrote. You may find some areas in your life where you can immediately make some changes however there may also be some places where making changes will come over time. In the next post I will share a little about how that list actually affects your life, your marriage, your relationship with your kids and your health. Stay tuned more to come.
